As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson
5.0
dark emotional medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

At the beginning of this book (the first third really) I wasn’t sure what else the plot could do. I’d sleuthed out the culprit and was impatient to get to the part where the characters put together the pieces that seemed so glaring to me.

But like I said, I was hardly half way. What else could possibly happen?!

And, boy, was I in for it. The second half of this book was leagues better than the first, and truly wound out the story in a brilliant way. Although all the plotting (on behalf of Pip) was a little long winded at times, it didn’t drag down the story for me, and my 5 stars feels well deserved in the way the author depicted the steady character growth and change throughout the series, as well as Pip’s PTSD.

My one downside of the series as a whole is that the characters were very formulaic, and I wish other characters got at least some of the steadily woven development that Pip received. Even Ravi, in comparison, was stagnant, with the only thing changing about his character was that he went from ‘a stranger’ to ‘a boyfriend’ to ‘someone who would push the outer limits of “anything” for another person’.

My final take away is that I think we all deserve a Ravi in our lives, either as a romantic love or any other.
