I hated this book with every fiber of my being. I get that this book is about rebellion, especially in a time when rebellion was strongly looked down on, but the character is very annoying to me. Granted, there are some aspects of grief and avoidance of that grief that make you feel a little sorry for him, but his long snotty digressions on the phonies of the world is a real turn off. He’s a kid. A bratty kid who has something sad happen to him, but even still, he is not likable in his brattiness. The writing isn’t horrible and I get the symbolism of the catcher in the rye part, but I hated listening to the character and his voice. He was grating. And it was NOT enjoyable for me, classic book or not.
Graphic: Alcoholism, Cursing, Mental illness, Panic attacks/disorders, Suicide
Moderate: Ableism, Child death
Minor: Cancer, Forced institutionalization
