3.5 stars. This is a tough one for me to rate. At the heart it is a wondrous story about love, loss, choosing your own fate, and the importance of family. There are some truly beautiful descriptions that draw you into the story. My main issue is that I didn’t care very much about the present day timeline, and instead wanted to stay with Domenica in the 1940s. Coming back to the present after parts of her story made them less impactful. The cover also alludes to a heartbreaking secret, but there really isn’t one. It’s also a bit confusing to keep track of all the characters and there were several that I had no idea how they fit into the larger story. That being said, it is a well written, mesmerizing historical fiction.
