The end of this book is when things get good. I was surprised, not gonna lie.

I loved the training montage, it was so fun! What I didn’t like was the talking animal sidekick. Yes,
Spoilerthe “chosen one”
has a talking owl. And she was mad annoying. I think authors have noticed how much people liked banter and now they’re overdoing it.
SpoilerDeclan
couldn’t have a single serious moment without his pet (sorry, the princess of magic or whatever) making some lame joke.

I also wish
Spoiler Declan had learned to embrace not having magic instead of finding out he was magic incarnate. I loved the training scenes, don’t get me wrong, I just think it’d have been more interesting from a character standpoint

Keelan and Justin are both idiots. You’ll find out why if you read; they both make the same dumb mistake.

Here’s the best part about this book: the sick ending. Yeah, that was a GREAT twist. First of all,
Spoilerwe’ve been focussing a lot on Tiana’s POV. And then she actually dies. Yeah, nice twist. I actually didn’t believe it at first, took me a while to have it sink in. Then, she KILLS JUSTIN????? Yeah, I actually made a note at this point: ‘OY I just got REALLY invested’
The end of the first book was bad, but this one?? Yeah, let me check my notes again: ‘See now this is a good book ending.’
Spoiler’I am returned!’ is so cinematic it felt like a movie I loved it

Some other notes:
I think the titles for the first two books should have been switched up. The first book is called Heir of Magic, but that concept is only worked out in this second book. And this book is called Ungifted, but
Spoilerwe find out very soon that Declan is not, in fact, ungifted.

Something I didn’t mention in my review for the first book was how much editing it still needed. There were quite a few typos and spelling and grammar mistakes in both books.

What happened to Ridley? Why introduce him if he won’t be there in the second book? I get
SpoilerTiana, that was a great misdirect
but Ridley just left the story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
