Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero
4.0
This really shouldn’t have worked at all: it’s a mashup of every kid detective series you’ve ever read or seen (the book/screen feel is further enhanced (ymmv, though) by some dramatic scenes being rendered as a script) combined with the eldritch horror of the Cthulhu mythos. It also tries to capitalise on recent nostalgia by being set in 1990, just before mobile phones and the internet would have rendered big chunks of this story redundant.
I really enjoyed it. It’s been a long time since I’ve read something that had such a ridiculous plot or even a reason for existing and which was also crafted to be as much fun as it was. To be read with a fair amount of of suspension of disbelief, which is a phrase I normally hate, but which is totally applicable here.
