Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey

3 to 3.5 stars.

It was... okay. There were some good concepts but its execution left a lot for me to desire. It's interesting to read a dystopian work again, as I haven't in a while.

None of the characters were ones I cared about. I thought Shirley was the most interesting from the group, but she barely got any screen time and was mostly a plot device. Juliette spent waaaaay too much time naval gazing. Some introspection is good. Moderate introspection is possibly even great! But this was just tedious. She's in the most hair-raising, perilous part of her journey and she ponders the questions of life and the universe. If it didn't happen all the time it wouldn't suck so much momentum out of the story, but it really does. And that made me annoyed every time we switched back to her perspective.

Bernard is a weird villain. He's so 1 dimensional for most of the book, then near the end he gets a bit of a rant moment where he share his viewpoints, which at least humanizes him somewhat (even if none of it makes sense) before (spoiler for the end of book)
Spoilerhe just randomly dies in the airlock? What? How did he even end up there? It's probably explained in future books, but at the end of this one no one even seems to care?

Lucas is also insufferable. What the fuck is he thinking, looking up confidential files on his crush and then getting irate and hoping to put her in jeopardy? It's infuriating. And then Juliette wants to be with this clown? I can't stand him. He goes from softy, romantic immature 25 year old, to completely overwhelmed upset crybaby, and ends up jealously raging wanna-be-but-isnt-her-lover.

The premise is wild and evil so the reader wants to root for the plot, but I'm just so tired of "overthrow the evil overlord" plots by now. I watched a video that told me sort of what happens in the rest of the series and I think I'm good now.
