O Pioneers! by Willa Cather
3.0

Tough one to rate because I switched back and forth between traditional book with text and audio book format, one of the two I enjoyed a lot more than the other. I enjoyed reading it more than I enjoyed listening to it as the reader sounded cartoony all too often when doing the voices of the Scandinavian characters. It sounded like the Swedish Chef on the Muppets had settled down as a farmer in Nebraska! Needless to say, that wasn't good.

Simple, direct, short book that does take you into the rural settings at end of 19th century, in particular Alexandra's family and her chaste relationship with a local guy who comes in and out of her world. Captures the serious, no nonsense quality that people from this region and this time had. God, family and work were the three most important elements in their lives and the struggle to make a living from the land is interjected in the story throughout.

Four stars for novel, three stars for the reader's interpretation via the audio book. I am going to read parts two and three of Cather's "Prairie" trilogy if I can get around to it soon.
