Those Who Dwell in Darkness by Steve McHugh
4.0
Loved this book.
It is first and foremost a detective series. That happens in a world where Vampires and humans coexist. The bulk of the book is an investigative exploration with a strong and nuanced focus on delicate powerplay between vampire factions, billionaires wanting to become vampires and vampires profiteering off illegally converting humans to vampires. The protagonist is someone who is powerful from the get go and well known and respected as an arbiter.
While reading most of the initial and linear storyline, I found myself often repeatedly wondering if the story was a result of the author asking themselves the question - what if a James Bond story featured vampires. Fancy cars, fancy hotels, lush setups - we have all of that.
Then about 80% in, we are thrown face first into absolute mayhem. The story dramatically pivots into a massive carnage and bloodshed that you most likely were waiting for from the moment you saw the cover. And the author doesn't disappoint. And that dog is just badass.
