Many years on from the original young adult series ‘Girls…’, we revisit the trio that dominated my childhood and preteen years. Now an adult, Ellie Allard is a mother, a teacher, an artist, but has the sensation that something isn’t quite right with her current state of affairs. I mean she has a beautiful daughter, Lottie, two wonderful best friends in Magda and Nadine and she has Myrtle Mouse, her cartoon strip she draws for the Guardian. On her fortieth birthday, the dissatisfaction riles within her, and she elects to make a change, or two, to her life. Ellie is determined that life doesn’t stop when you become a mother, but rather it begins again at forty.
Jacqueline, Ms Wilson, the icon you are!
I had the absolute joy of watching a talk by Jacqueline Wilson, the idol of my childhood, at Hay Festival last week. I’m sure any book published by her before 2010 has been thoroughly devoured by me. I am absolutely overjoyed by her releasing adult books. All I can say is I want more, or I might end up reading ‘Cookie’ or ‘Lily Alone’ or picking up ‘Hetty Feather’ again.
I loved this - albeit slightly triggering for those who find age gap relationships troubling. Ellie is her own woman, of her own merits, and years of independence with her daughter by her side means she isn’t willing to lay down her morals for anyone.
