Permutation City by Greg Egan
4.0

I've been re-reading Greg Egan's Permutation City, although "re-reading" isn't really the right word when Egan has totally rewritten the 1994 edition I read back in the day (and on which my four-star rating was based). In the process, the current 2013 version has become a book only its author could love -- the philosophical preoccupations that jazzed the original tale having metastasized to take over the story altogether, much to the detriment of the latter.

The lesson (which hits home, since I've recently been offered the same opportunity wrt Singularity and Dualism) is: if given the chance to rewrite your masterwork -- turn it down!
