The House at the Edge of Magic by Amy Sparkes

3.0

When Nine steals a house shaped ornament from a woman's purse she has no idea of the adventure she is about to start. Out of curiosity she knocks on the tiny door, and watches the house grow into a huge yet odd looking house. She enters and is introduced to Flaberghast the wizard, Eric the Troll and Dr Spoon the wooden spoon. They are desperately in need of Nine's help in order to escape a curse set on them by an evil witch.

This was a fun story. It's very entertaining, with the house being full of trickery and magic, and the characters a boisterous and madcap collection. Eric the housekeeper was my favourite.

The storyline is good, probably aimed at the younger side of middle grade so a bit younger than I normally go for, but still an enjoyable read. If anything I would say it felt a little rushed, and there maybe wasn't quite as much character building and detail as there could have been. It was a shame because I think there is the making of an excellent middle grade fantasy here but overall lacked a bit of development.
