Susan Cooper’s writing style agrees with me making the book easy to get into, even though I struggled with some of the dialogues. Alex Jennings’s performance in the audiobook helped jeep me interested in and excited about the book.
The main characters—Simon, Jane and Barney—remind me of the Pevensies (from the Chronicles of Narnia) and the Baudelaires (from A Series of Unfortunate Events). They were clever and filled with curiosity and the love for adventure. I enjoy reading about children like the Drews.
The plot is simple and easy to follow. I believe my students would enjoy reading this story. It has the right mix of mystery, danger and adventure to appeal to some of my students.
I would definitely recommend this book to my students.
4.5 stars because I didn’t enjoy reading some parts of the conversation.
