This plot was right up my alley but the diversions with James's family bored and annoyed me so badly I almost DNF'd it. The main plot was really good, the relationship a nice surprise, even if the big finale drug on a bit for my taste. But then the whole family plot.
The author tried to give a happy ending but no, in that era and situation, there is no way that ending works out happy short of them faking their own deaths and leaving the country. Which I was fully in favor of every time his family came back up. I mean, surely that field of work would have connections, amirite?
The narrator was fun. Aneurin's voice was a lovely tour of some of Scotland's famous actor sons. Randomly there was David Tennant, Billy Boyd, and Ewan McGregor's voices jumping around. It definitely amused me.
