The Scones

The Ward sisters are a fun group. Independent and smart. Tough. Women to be admired.

I love it when an American author writes books that take place in England. Being an American living in England, I love reading what experiences the author adds to the story. British scones are amazing. Clotted cream is delicious. Drinking tea? Yes please. Bangers and mash? Uh huh. I remember my first chip butty and it was a revelation. Lia's experiences of driving round the countryside and being amazed at seeing old buildings and greenery match my experiences completely. The old libraries are magical. British swearing is great! Not understanding football is understandable.

More things I love about this book are the underlying themes of family and learning to live despite an uncomfortable past with family. It's hard letting go of the past. Sometimes it takes an unexpected event to catapult a person out of their standard way of thinking and living in order to truly live. This book made me ever so aware that I'm a lot like Lia and Jude in that my past has made me a bit hesitant to live in the present...books are always teaching me.

This was a great book, especially if you like British footballers and English literature. And scones. Especially scones.

Now I wait for Iz's book...
