Mechanicum by Graham McNeill
3.0

I read this one because I felt like the Martian piece of the Horus Heresy was something that I was missing from the larger puzzle. How did the Mechanicum play into the whole giant 50-some-odd book affair? I don't have an intimate knowledge of the tabletop, so it was a blackhole!

I still... don't really feel like I have an answer. McNeil gives a vague sense of possibilities lost. But without much of a Terran connection to the narrative, you don't really get a true sense of the stakes.

I also feel like more could have been done to convey the sense of scale involved with the titans. Maybe this is just one of those things where visuals do a ton more work.

I don't regret reading the book. It went really quickly and was a light read. But probably I would have been better served plowing ahead with the larger space marine narrative.
