City of Thieves by David Benioff

5.0

Also known as the “Russian egg book”in our house!
“City of Thieves” by David Benioff (co-producer and screenrunner of Game of Thrones”), is a quirky adventure/thriller story essentially about two men who are set the impossible challenge of finding a dozen eggs. 😂 Yes, I know.... I thought it sounded strange too, but actually this is a really well written and gripping novel...
It is set during the siege of Leningrad, when starving Lev is arrested for looting the body of a dead soldier. Instead of the expected summary execution at dawn, Lev and charming soldier Koyla (arrested for desertion) are encharged with the task of finding 12 eggs for an NKVD colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. The alternative is death.
Their bizarre quest is an exciting tale of survival against all the odds during the coldest winter in history at a time of widespread starvation and deprivation. This captivating book is a satisfying read that beautifully explores friendship, romance and endurance.
