Project Hail Mary filled me with happiness and laughter as I read this book. This gook slowly reveals the importance and stakes of the protagonists predicament throughout the story while constantly keeping him on his toes. The insights of the protagonists are witty, endearing, and snarky all while showing his depth of character. This book is an adventure of tense moments and reflective pauses that keep the reader wanting to continue forward. Learning of the predicament and experiencing the dangers of space propel this story forward right until the closing moments. This book is for someone wanting an enjoyable, funny, and scientifically compelling book. If anything I wish there was more because I enjoyed the characters and drama immensely.
I mark this as spoilers because this is integral to the story but might be better not knowing when going into this book, but knowing this won’t actively ruin your experience. While it dealt with a serious subject and the actions of the protagonist had important urgency, that all feels like the backdrop and scaffolding to the real adventure, that of bonding and friendship. As cheesy as it may sound or feel, the real story here is the blossoming friendship and development of complete trust. Two people braving the worst of environments, puzzles, and conditions only to find that they need and want each other’s company.
