The Defense by Steve Cavanagh
3.0

Eddie Flynn, a former con artist turned defense attorney, is pulled back into the courtroom against his will when Russian mob boss Olek Volchek kidnaps his daughter. With only 48 hours, Eddie must win an impossible murder trial, using every trick he knows to ensure his daughter’s safety—all while a bomb is strapped to his back and the FBI is watching.

I recently picked up The Defense after receiving an ARC of Witness 8 (book #8 in the Eddie Flynn series). Realizing it was a series, I decided to start from the beginning to better understand Eddie's character. This was a fast-paced legal thriller with plenty of courtroom tension and a fascinating protagonist—Eddie, a con man turned lawyer, who reminded me a bit of Mickey Haller from The Lincoln Lawyer, with a con-man twist. Though some scenes felt a bit far-fetched (Eddie scaling courthouse walls, for instance), the book was quick and exciting, showcasing Eddie’s clever maneuvers and con-man skills. The Russian mob focus didn’t particularly grab my interest, but I enjoyed Cavanagh’s writing style and look forward to exploring more in this series.
