Abby continues to be a favourite writer for me! She writes some of my favourite heroes, and Justin is no exception. Even when Justin’s life is at it’s most stressful, he does everything he can to show up for Emma, the definition of if he wanted to he would. I loved the way he stepped up to take care of everyone in his life. Emma’s character is complex. She’s naturally inclined to be helpful and caring to those around her but also withdrawn and closed off. The friendships in this book were really sweet and brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. I especially loved seeing Justin’s mom’s relationship with her friend Leigh. Abby’s Easter eggs and returning character pop ups are such a fun part of her books and the ones in Just For The Summer are perfect!

I think it’s important to mention this was far more emotional than I expected. It dealt a lot with mental health, to the point that I would say the romance is more in the background. I found the struggles both characters dealt with to be interesting and I was engaged with the story. While I enjoyed the romance between Justin and Emma, the romance won’t be what sticks with me most from this book. Instead, I’m left with a lasting impression and empathy for people navigating life with loved ones struggling with mental illness.
