Wish I Were Here by Melissa Wiesner
3.0

This book was fine. I like Melissa Weisner's writing style and character building. But the premise of this book was ridiculous. It's pretty clear the author doesn't know any tenure-track professors because none of what transpired with the FMC's job would have happened.

Hiring committees for tenure track jobs painstakingly look for the right fit. Academic departments are not hiring someone else on full-time right before the start of the semester to teach classes if things fall through with paperwork. They'd easily get an adjunct or grad student to pick up the classes and would absolutely help sort out missing identity issues. And no admin is gonna accuse a Ph.D. of not writing their own dissertation. That's absolutely ludicrous given how many articles and conference papers an applicant would need to include on a CV, and hiring committees actually read that shit. And senior faculty wouldn't expect a new hire to write a bunch of papers on a deadline and expect first authorship. That kind of shit might happen with grad students, not with a colleague.

Clearly my dissatisfaction stems from knowing too much about academia. It made suspension of disbelief impossible. Non-academics might like this more.
