In many ways an amazing book, I found it difficult to get through. The prose is beautiful, I found myself carrying a pencil with me to underline particularly beautiful passages, yet it was hard to concentrate on, for some reason.
In the introduction to the present edition, Joseph Conrad says that the book has been accused of having got away from him. I tend to partially agree with whomever made that statement. It would have probably worked wonderfully as a novella, felt tighter, as a narrative. I obviously ended up liking it as it was, yet... There's a nagging feeling that had it been shorter it'd have been easier to grasp. Not "read", but "grasp".
