Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto

3.0

"No, I’m better than my cousins. Better than my uncles—and I sure as hell am better than my father. I won’t abandon my family. Not for love, not for anything.”

Reading this book felt like watching the craziest Asian drama. Anything is happening at anytime. Family drama? Romance? Craziness? Check check check. Look no offense to anyone but being an Asian myself I felt like some of the things these characters did were a little extreme in the name of preserving traditions and following their beliefs. I mean seriously, who remains calm af after seeing a dead body and then they are being proud of their child for respecting a dead man ,whom she KILLED don't you forget, by covering their face? Like I said, it's the typical Asian TV drama put to words.

“I’m basically driven by a mixture of caffeine and familial guilt.”

The thing I loved about this book was everything except the romance part and all the talks about putting your family first etc etc. In the entire book Meddy's all about how her aunts are the only family she's had and how much they love each other. But I felt like the aunts were being a little toxic? They just kept on making their sisters feel low and sometimes even feel bad about themselves. Also the romance part- pUh-LeaSe. It could have been way better. Nathan tried hard to be likeable but his personality felt too one dimensional. And I really don't get how he's still in love with Meddy when she was the one who broke her heart? If this was any other romance book there would have been a great second chance "enemies to lovers" plot and not whatever in the hell was happening in this book.

“You're not a mess. You just kill by accident only. Bad luck. Can happen to anyone.”

The ending was the best though. However unbelievable (and unrealistic) everything was, I couldn't stop myself from laughing. Everyone who loves drama and thrillers would love this book. This book could have been better if the romance between the characters was told in a little different way (i.e. Nathan stops acting like an idiot who's madly in love with a woman who broke his heart and then never gave af about it).

After reading this book I have come to a conclusion: In the future you'd either find me in the prison (99.9% chances since my luck sucks) or writing a book where I talk about how a book inspired me to commit a murder and how I was lucky and how my Asian family helped me in getting away.
