First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

5.0

I’m hopping on the hype train, because I loved this! This was Elston’s first adult novel and I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to hopefully another thriller from her in the future!

At first I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the romance subplot of this, but I ended up enjoying it. I liked that the characters didn’t change who they are, and left them a bit gray and morally undefined. That may not be for everyone but I thought it fit the vibe. All of the characters have differing moral lines and I really enjoyed them, especially Devon as a side character. I liked the way the ending turned out as well in reference to the characters and their relationships.

The time jumps were well done and sporadic enough to be interesting but not take away from the main storyline or get annoying. I liked that they were based on a different identity Evie had had throughout the years.

Overall I thought this was a fun thriller and I liked the way the mystery unraveled! I did guess some of the reveals but not all of them, and it’s not truly obvious till you’re on top of the reveals in my opinion.

I would recommend this if you like:
-a romance subplot
-morally gray characters
-spy/secret identity stories
-criminal enterprise stories
