Sarah's Key
by Tatiana de Rosnay
I really enjoyed the book. I'm on the fence between 3 and 4 stars. I liked the plot device of weaving the two stories together, it kept me turning pages. I found Julia to be a complicated, rich character. I struggled with Sarah, she did not feel like a 11 yr old child going through a nightmare. Her voice was more annoyingly didactic and hammers the reader with questions she wants us to ask rather than allowing the reader come to the conclusion on his/her own. For example, I gotta believe that in the moment of the horror, a little girl does not ask herself, "don't you have children? how can you do this?" She isn't analytical...she is terrified. It could be that I recently read "Shades of Gray" which is also a story of children surviving and is very well written. But that was a minor annoyance. It was a powerful story.
