Sunset by Jessie Cave

How to even begin reviewing a book that details my biggest fear?

Ruth and Hannah are sisters, but they’re more than that. They’re best friends, each others own biggest fan, critic, and confidant. The unthinkable happens, and they are ripped apart.
Jessie Cave has done an outstanding job of depicting grief in her debut novel, Sunset. Inspired by her own loss, she portrays grief in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever read before. There are so many moments in this that caused tears and breathlessness - the dynamic between Ruth and Hannah felt so real, this is what sisterhood is (to me). The writing is effortlessly beautiful, with some cutting dialogue. It is very much a character driven novel, which I think reflects how life might come to a standstill when one loses the love of their life. Very raw.
Ruth’s grief is messy and chaotic, and exactly how I imagine mine would be if I ever lost my Hannah. This book is a firm five stars for me.
