Orphan Train
by Christina Baker Kline
As with every dual-narrative book I read, one narrative always seems to blow the other out of the water. In this case, Vivian/Dorothy/Niahm is the soul of the book that reels you in. Molly is unfortunately cliche, out of touch with the reader, and the only reason I don't rate this 5 stars. Her purpose was entirely to relate Vivian's story back to modern times and open up the end of the story, which *was* necessary. But where Vivian's story is so carefully researched and crafted to stay true to history and evoke empathy, Molly's is recycled stereotypes plucked from a bin where it seems the author, editors, and publishers said, "Eh, that'll fill it out."
Overall I enjoyed it. I took my time reading it, but it seems a perfect read to knock out at once on a road trip or flight. I think it's important to know it reads like a grown-up American Girl book. It is first and foremost a fictional story, with flecks of real history sprinkled in. There is even a section of real Orphan Train photos in the back, but these are still just a peak at how much history you can find on the subject once interested.
