A Glimmer of Death by Valerie Wilson Wesley

4.0

An Engaging Mystery To Start A New Series

Valerie Wilson Wesley is a new-to-me author, while Diana Blue is a new-to-me narrator. I love finding new storytellers and the premise for this tale interested me. Happily, I was not disappointed on any front.

I really enjoyed meeting all the characters Valerie created – loved to hate a couple too.
Our protagonist, Odessa Jones (Dessa), exhibited many of the personality traits that I love. She’s intelligent, resilient, is learning to be self-reliant and has oodles of gumption. The supporting cast are a diverse group, showcasing lots of different characteristics and complexities. I loved that Dessa was in her forties too and enjoyed seeing that many of the midlife challenges that we face were included in this story. Watching her blossom and grow in confidence as she tried to unravel the mysteries in this book, was beautiful to see.

Diana Blue’s performance felt in perfect harmony with Valerie’s story.
I really enjoyed the pace at which she read this story. The emotions and inflections she used for the different scenes felt natural and brought them to life. Diana adjusted her voice enough for each of the characters so that I never felt lost in the dialogue. She also managed to convey their personalities through my headphones too, with the voices that she chose for each one. Diana’s skill enhanced my enjoyment of this audiobook.

A Glimmer of Death is a wonderful audiobook – I really enjoyed it.

This cosy mystery revealed its layers as the story evolved and I couldn’t help but get reeled in. Not only is there a murder to solve but Dessa learns of the dangers and implications of getting mixed up with unscrupulous people. All the while trying to find a new normal as a widow, with the added sprinkle of some (unwanted and untrusted) psychic gifts. There’s no life-or-death perilous cliffhanger at the end and the murder is Solved! WoopWoop! However, I want to find out how Dessa settles into her new life, so I’ll be eagerly waiting for the next story.
