The Black Cauldron
by Lloyd Alexander
This was a definite improvement over the first in the series. Again, the character development isn't very subtle, and neither is the language, but it's a kids' book, so I can't really complain about that. It's all very predictable, and I still can't decide if that's because I read it when I was 11 or if it's because it's a foundation for a lot of fantasy tropes. Who knows. Still, I prefer this book to the first one, by a lot.
