Consuelo
by George Sand
Almost three books in one! It begins with Consuelo's life as an opera singer in Venice, reading like a novel of light romantic intrigue; after about a hundred pages, it takes an abrupt turn into the Gothic; finally, it turns into more of a bildungsroman (this section also has a lot of irrelevant digressions, and I thought it was the weakest). Consuelo herself is appealing, although most of the men are creeps.
