From the Tops of the Trees by Kao Kalia Yang

5.0

The color use in this book really sets a simple, somber tone with muted browns and greens and natural colors. I like how the books shows the difficulty of the refugee camp but also shows the joy of a child because small children have a special magic to find joy in mundane things. When they got dressed up in their best clothes I thought they were going to leave the refugee camp and go out in to the world. It surprised me and broke my heart a little that they climbed a tree. I love that this is based on the author's life and there is a real photo of them in the tree top at the end along with background information.
