If I had read this book at the age of 16, I’d probably have loved it. As a 49-year-old, however, I didn’t find it among those YA books that mesmerize me regardless of my age. Apart from the fact that the race in power was black, and some charming coinages such as blankers and Crossmas, neither the form nor the content went far beyond the cliches of this genre. The audiobook presentation didn’t help much either. All in all, I had much higher expectations for this book. I’m not sure if I will read the next volumes.
