The Book of Azrael by Amber V. Nicole
4.0

I’m going to start reviews so I can remember these books because I love them, but I’m railing through them and forget. This book I somehow stumbled upon while looking at Kayla Edwards Instagram and I was like, you know what, color me interested.

It started slow for me. I got the whole idea of we needed the entire background on Dianna (who I absolutely love, a villain FMC? We lovveee her), but it took forever it felt like to get to Liam. Like, so long. We got the extremely convoluted introduction of the Hand but then, like I said, took a while to get to Liam/Samkiel. Then it continued to be slow. The deal of their back and forth and when he had her Dianna was super drawn out and how much they hated each other. THIS IS A SLOW MF BURN. I liked it, don’t get me wrong, and i either love or hate a slow burn, but I was getting so worried I was going to DNF. I did not DNF and I am so glad I didn’t. The plot was incredible, the romance, the story. The romance felt quick, but also not at all because the slow burn was done well and it was very clear they had developed meaningful feelings and had a strong connection when they shouldn’t have.

My hang up (and it continues to be as I’m moving through the series, I’m on book two): the world building I am not sold on. The imagination and detail is incredible, she is so talented, but I was genuinely confused on where anything was in the world or universe or whatever their whole existence is. I can’t even say realm because it sounds like there’s a gajillion. I literally cannot tell you where a damn thing is or where it belongs except that Onuna sounds like it’s Earth, but I don’t understand where absolutely anything is there either or the purpose of all these places. I’m someone that usually does pretty well getting a feel for worlds in fantasies and catching on, and I’m on the second book and still haven’t caught on. It makes it hard. It’s extremely creative, told in such great detail, but it was almost the ultimate turnoff for me. I stayed for the characters and the baseline plot, both so great.

I highly suggest, but definitely give those two warnings. Spice is also low, beware, because I’m a spice girly. BUT, like I said, a slowwwww burn and you get some at the end and a little bit more in the next one, so just hang on. I truly don’t think you’ll regret it, you just gotta push through.
