Beta
by Jasinda Wilder
A Visciously Brave, Stunning, & Extraordinary Book...
What a rocket powered launch into book two of Jasinda Wilder’s Alpha Series! Where “Alpha” was a slow, romantic stroll, “Beta” is a jet engine wearing pack of psychopathic roller derby queens!
Despite beginning mere weeks after “Alpha” ends. “Beta” grabs you by the throat, rips you from the serenity of Roth and Kyrie’s world exploration, and thrusts you into Roth’s former world of international arms dealers as his past catches up with him. Thus, setting them both on a terrifying path of events that leave them at the brink of life and death.
This book is far beyond the label of “erotic” and every reviewer comparing it to others such as Fifty Shades should be ashamed. Because this book, this series, is so much more than that. Oh no, this book is no mere romance or erotic novel; it is a Jason Bourne meets Fatal Attraction juggernaut! And it will leave you breathless…and disturbed.
This installment is a lesson, that in life, the sins of youth often get repaid in horrifying ways. And as if Wilder is compelled by demons to drive this point all the way home, she extraordinarily shifts “Beta” into perilous, life altering territory. Territory I can honestly say I have never seen in a novel like this before. “Beta” is a stunning departure from, not only the first book, but almost everything else I’ve ever read within this sub-genre! And in a heartbreaking, rage inducing turn of events Roth is pushed beyond reason, forced to endure horrifying, truly life altering actions. Then, just when you think things can’t get worse, Kyrie is thrust into the clutches of an evil so desperate to destroy them both she must alter the very fabric of her humanity to survive it.
The chain of events put into motion within this story is nothing short of extraordinary. Not only for its unflinching brutality, but for the courage undertaken by Wilder to write a piece so viciously realistic, so horrifically honest in its premise, so absolutely soul crushing in its portrayal, it will leave you speechless. In all the dark romance books I’ve read over the years, never have I encountered such a reversal of circumstance. And I truly applaud this author for writing it. Because despite its brutality, it’s gritty and real, it’s truthful and believable, it’s as shocking as it is heartbreaking. And in a literary landscape where woman are the typical victim, it’s necessary to remind the masses that cruelty happens to men too, no matter how strong, how alpha, how in control. Life. Just. Callously. Happens…
Never in my life have I wanted to reach into the pages of a book and kill a character like I did Gina.
I will be honest; this book is not for the faint of heart or easily offended. This is not the slow and sensual journey of book one. Roth and Kyrie’s plight is truly difficult to read. Your gut will clench. Bile will rise in your throat. You will cringe, and gasp, and seethe at the terrors written within the chapters of this book. But my god is it brilliant! And I promise you. I truly, irrevocably swear to you, it is worth it because, beyond the brutality, beyond the shattering of bodies and souls, there is unadulterated beauty in the chaos. Because from despair grows unshakable devotion. From the horror grows a love so deep it cannot be broken. From the violence grows a loyalty so profound it will never waver. And from it all arises something so strong, something joined so firmly on an emotional and cellular level, it makes the mythical phoenix look like a damn baby duck. And I fear for anyone who thinks to get in their way or threaten their happiness in book three.
All the stars, this book gets all the stars out there to give, and even though published some years ago, easily makes my top reads of 2019 list.
