3.0

NK Jemisin really knows how to create captivating worlds with equally captivating magic systems and the city of Gujaareh incorporating “narcomancy” in The Killing Moon is no different. In this we follow 3 main characters, two of which wield this power in which they enter the minds of those deemed “corrupt” to “guide” their souls into a peaceful “dreamscape”. You’ll have to read the book to figure out what this means, but like I said, it’s pretty compelling!

The conflict in this was also pretty intriguing with corruption seemingly around every corner of the elite, but to me it was also quite predictable. The main issue I had that brought this down, though, was the relationship between two of the main characters. I won’t give away any spoilers, but I felt uncomfortable whenever this was discussed throughout the narrative.

Nonetheless, I still enjoyed this overall. I’ll forever be jealous of Jemisin’s creativity and imagination.
