No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
4.0

They need to have an FBI anti-piracy type warning screen before the movie starts: "This Movie is Based on a Book That Won an Award. This Movie Also Won Awards."

I have a hard time knowing if the book is tense and gripping because as I read, the movie, which I know is great, is on screen in my head. And I have a hard time knowing if the book's themes are easy to understand because I've already read analysis of the film. But I'm pretty sure the action is great and the themes are obvious - normally I don't love it as in my face as the sheriff's narration, but it felt integral to the story here. The simple writing style added to the tone and focused me entirely on the action, which gave it a pace I loved.

I'll never be convinced that omitting quotation marks and indicators of who is speaking is additive to the literature. If they bothered Cormac McCarthy while he wrote, have someone add them after. One could argue they contribute to the simple style and pace, but then why stop there why bother with commas or periods or capital letters or apostrophes you see what i mean its annoying. It feels like just an effort to be counterculture. I repeatedly lost the thread of which person was speaking. Minus one star for that, I really enjoyed everything else.
