Raven's Gate
by Anthony Horowitz
2.5* rounded up to 3.
I didn't personally like it, but I know students who have enjoyed it so it gained a half star for getting them reading.
I found there were too many tropes, from the orphaned boy with special powers to the evil old crone with a stupid sidekick. But perhaps that's why it appeals to younger readers who might not have had chance yet to discover the prevalence of such ideas. I didn't feel there was all that much horror either, apart from the deaths. Even the final climax didn't feel atmospheric, I was just reading to get through it.
The book is the first in a series and the book keeps hinting what is to come. But it's the same repeated hint, which gets boring, and this book alone isn't enough to encourage me to read any more. There was a lot of action in the story so events kept moving. If you were finding the book interesting I can see it being able to keep you reading.
