The Christmas Party
by Mikayla Davids
This book initially seems like a very dark and sinister thriller: with an interesting set up for a family reunion. Yet what it turned into was a dysfunctional family drama with secrets unfolding every step of the way. Three sisters and their mother are reunited after a ten year estrangement for a Christmas party to remember at a beautiful English estate hotel, owned by Erin, the middle sister and husband Aaron. Every sister and character had a peculiar back story and motive that leads them towards a murder on that fateful night.
There are lots of perspectives thrown in from each character in every chapter, especially with the baggage of them all from ten years ago to the present time. each of the characters was conflicted and had something to hide, and their dishonesty was the only truthful thing about them all. While all the family characters seem to be explored, there are a few others that that seemed dubious in their place in the story when they appeared. I wish more of the secrets were fleshed out more – there were a few red herrings which could have had greater depth to the overall story. of hurt feelings. On the other hand, I didn't think there was much mystery to the story. I was unconvinced at the ending, and I was really hoping for the ending to have not been so rushed and with the number of unreliable narrators, some more depth would have grounded the twists at the end. The book was a very quick read for me, perfect for a holiday read.
