Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff

adventurous dark emotional

My main critique is that at points the book can be quite dull- the writer switches between two plot points and the latter takes a while to become interesting. Especially when we are introduced to Gabriel in his older timeline there are attempts to display his lac of care for the world that comes of as quite clumsy such as 'who the fuck told you I was a hero?' can come of as quite cliche and the overuse of swearing to the point it looses its effect. However, despite this what the book does well is create a lot of questions to keep you reading, and the use of twists and turns are effective in the book. The character creation was also really good, Decoste's character arch really fully fleshed out and at the end of the book you are left with questions about
the Esani line and who De lion's true father is
The relationship between Gabriel and Dior is also well developed and in the end it reminded me truly of The Last of us
despite loosing his own daughter and developing a hard heart, he saves the Dior from death even if it might have saved the world.
