do you wonder why girls go to the bathroom together? this books does because it is the portrayl of girlhood: hazy, abstracted, idealistic...

i'm astounded that tate put the nuanced (often inexplicable, and certainly unspeakable) experience of teenage girlhood into words. the first person collective POV reflects the group mentality, highlighting the betrayl of attracting male attention—a secret desire set in motion by the society who is adament on reducing women to their appearances. their internalization of the male gaze, as well as idealization of the older girls, are other interesting aspects.

while yes, the book is "confusing" (only the ending, imo), i think it's purposeful.
the disorientation and abstractness, imo, can be considered a coping mechanism for jody after what she went through with stone.
considering the context, i don't necessarily think it's "bad writing," but i'm also really good at making excuses.

maybe i’m toxic but this was such an accurate portrayal of girlhood.
