Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill

4.0

Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill is yet another "robot apocalypse" books I've read recently, and not by conscious choice.

It seems, haven't read one, the algorithms have decided this is my jam and are recommending more and more.

On the one hand this is obviously a very similar theme, but the tone and story was different enough to still keep me engaged and satisfied.

Brittle is a robot who is tracking failing robots, and when they shut down she disassembles them for usable parts. I liked how this is clearly not a heroic stance, but a morally grey one at best. She doesn't actually destroy or harm robots still conscious, but she may just have them believe they will be fixed...

So, when Brittle suddenly needs very hard to come by spare parts for self repair, a mostly crew of robots forms, with different goals, but working together for now as their path seems to align.

I liked how the different personalities and agencies clashed or played off each other, and there were nice twists along the way that kept the story fresh despite having seen plenty of desolate places with robots trying to survive after humanity is (mostly) gone.
