buttercupita 's review for:
Unfamiliar Fishes
by Sarah Vowell
My resolution for 2017 is to read at least one history book a month. Hawaii's history probably would not have been high on my list, but I found this on audio and I had a long road trip (though I read most of the book in hard copy, which I preferred.) I'm impressed at how easily Vowell can interweave contemporary experiences of her travel in Hawaii with the history of the islands and history beyond (e.g. the 19th century whaling industry; the Cherokees' clashes with the federal government in the US.) It was an interesting book, but sometimes repetitive.
