Saving Francesca
by Melina Marchetta
The story revolves around Francesca, as she starts the school year in a new school where majority of the students are male (and this is an issue for her as she came from an all-girl school). It starts out as your typical contemporary YA. She misses her old popular crowd, as she finds herself being forced to mingle with the 'uncool' crowd and is somehow 'bullied' by mean kids. Oh and what school girl story is complete without some boy drama? And add to that some drama back at home when her mother, the person keeping all of them together, seems to fall apart in depression.
She continuously struggle in school to fit in but she finds herself standing out. And then she starts to appreciate who her real friends are, and she embraces her potential. It caught me off guard because all the while, I was thinking this was just the typical school girl story. The emotional punch came really late in the story (like the last five chapters or so), but believe me when I say this... those chapters just came out of nowhere and I just found myself emotional all of sudden.
I think [a:Melina Marchetta|47104|Melina Marchetta|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1277655889p2/47104.jpg] writes great contemporaries, in the essence that she writes realistic scenarios, jampacked with honest emotions. Not too light, not too tragic. Perfect blend. It's also a quick read so I urge you guys to read this. And the ending was so sweet and satisfying.
OH! And did I mention that one of the minor characters is a Filipina. REPRESENT! For that, I'm beaming with joy. It doesn't effect my ratings though, but these things always warms my heart as I am a Filipina myself.
