Friends with Boys, Volume 1
by Faith Erin Hicks
3.5
After being homeschooled her whole life, Maggie is going to attend a real high school. Her three older brothers already go there, but she quickly realizes that they're too busy with their own lives to hang around with their little sis. Instead, she makes friends with Lucy and Alistair, a brother and sister with matching mohawks and some mysterious history with her brother and the school's #1 bully. Also, there is a ghost.
Friends with Boys has crisp, detailed black & white art and several great characters. Despite dealing with a mom who abandoned her family, bullying, and not fitting in, it's surprisingly cheerful & doesn't take itself too seriously. The coming-of-age storyline isn't terribly unique, but this is a well-done variation on the theme. Maybe it's because I recently read [b:Anya's Ghost|9615347|Anya's Ghost|Vera Brosgol|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1316739317s/9615347.jpg|14279456], but I wasn't feeling the ghost thing.
Good for homeschoolers, fans of [b:Smile|6393631|Smile|Raina Telgemeier|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1256154174s/6393631.jpg|6582125], and anyone looking for a coming-of-age story that isn't overly angsty.
