shanflan 's review for:
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida
by Shehan Karunatilaka
Things I liked: learning about the atrocities of the Sri Lankan civil war (and Karunatilaka’s satirical humor and comedic relief), the cover design, second person narration, and a really interesting premise
Things I didn't like: the reading experience 😬 admittedly I rarely like magical realism in action, but the exposition was so meandering and hard to follow that I never felt invested in the characters
Major Themes: the importance of journalism, the corruption of social systems (in any social hierarchy, those in power will abuse their followers)
