OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. This was an amazing start to the new year. I requested this on a whim because the author appeared on a podcast episode focusing on Jennifer's Body and I was obsessed with her - I didn't expect much but I was blown away. This book is gruesome, gory, romantic and thrilling! I could not put this book down when reading it because I was so engaged. Our main character Hazel was amazing and I really loved reading from her perspective as a young woman in 19th century Scotland trying to become a physician. She goes through lengths to study medicine (and I think if you enjoyed (or didn't enjoy) Kerri Maniscalco's Stalking Jack the Ripper you would really enjoy this). The romance in the novel was subtle as it falls behind her passion for anatomy, but still so wonderful to read. My only problem with the novel is that it ended a little abruptly - there is some nods to the study of alchemy that I would love to see explored further if Schwartz decides to continue with a series. Hazel's strength with being a woman in the 19th century and having goals and ambitions was a really refreshing perspective to read from and my negative with the book is simply because I wish it would be longer. This was such a fun read, I would really recommend it to everyone.
