A Whole New World
by Liz Braswell
As the first in Disney’s Twisted Tale series, A Whole New World reimagines Aladdin with a dark twist: what if Jafar got the lamp first? While the premise is intriguing, the execution didn’t quite live up to its potential.
The writing leans heavily into a very young YA style—simple, repetitive, and lacking the emotional depth that could have elevated the story. The darker tone feels more surface-level than meaningful, and character development takes a backseat to plot mechanics.
It’s a quick read and may work for younger fans just starting to explore fantasy retellings, but it didn’t offer much beyond the novelty of the premise. A cool idea, but ultimately underwhelming.
