My short review is that this book is extremely over-hyped and needs massive content warnings for explicit DV and SA.
Pros:
- the narrators are phenomenal
- some of the prose is absolutely gorgeous
- the most salient takeaway is that women have never stopped being persecuted or oppressed and must continue to fight for autonomy
Cons:
- about 70% or more of the book (by volume of words) is describing or addressing explicit violence towards and oppression of women
- it highly emphasizes a femme-ified rugged individualism and independent isolation as a solution to systemic issues
- while abortion is a human right accessed by some of the women in this book, the treatment it gets is mired in patriarchal expectations and moralizatins, which goes almost entirely unaddressed
There is really so much potential in the core concept, but it just seems wasted on a narrative that relies on recurrent trauma to get readers emotional instead of nuanced and inspired storytelling.
