Ragnarok by A.S. Byatt

5.0

this novel interweaves narrative and myth beautifully. it strays from the recent trend of retellings and instead depicts the myths as such, without humanizing the characters, without giving them too much imagined depth or nuance. the novelty of them lies instead in the fact that they are simply told yet simultaneously explored through the eyes of a girl and her emotional and philosophical response to the stories. the narrative style is rich in imagery, detailed, nature-focused. glittering and brilliant. a brilliant, truthful and imaginative version of norse myth.
