A retired soldier receives a letter that a childhood friend is dying and races to the countryside house. Once there, they notice strange things, mushrooms everywhere, wildlife acting unnaturally, and the appearances and actions of the friends. Now, having to solve it all.

This is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poes "the fall of the house of usher" which I've not read myself so I can't compare. Overall, this book was fantastic start to finish. I wish I could read this for the first time again.

It's subtle on the horror but does have a good amount of creepy moments. There's an eerie feeling that just sits with you and slowly increases with the story and just makes your skin crawl.

I think this would make a great movie adaptation.

This is my second book by T. Kingfisher and I'm sold. They are now one of my favourite authors.
