Raw and brutal.
The “plot” in summary is: a servant girl runs away from an English settlement, and tries to survive in the wilderness. As she travels alone, heading toward an almost certain death, she remembers and muses upon her own history and the way humanity interacts with the natural world. There is hardly any dialog, only what she recalls. Very very rarely, the author gives us another point of view for a page or so.
The girl’s suffering and her slow realization of a greater truth than anything she has ever known offer the modern reader much to think about.
